New Year’s Eve in Cornwall

New Year's Eve in Cornwall

I have many fond memories of spending New Year’s Eve in Cornwall. Growing up, we’d spend Christmas at home before meeting up with the extended family around the 28th and spending the New Year together. With brisk walks on near-deserted beaches (and a dip in the sea for those brave enough) it’s a magical time of year in Cornwall, and the perfect opportunity to get away from it all and enjoy some well-earned rest and recuperation before settling into the New Year.

On the train down to the coast this year it occurred to me that I can’t be the only one making this journey. We all have our own traditions with family and friends at this time of year. But for anyone looking to mix things up this year, and perhaps start a new tradition, here are some of the best New Year’s events in Cornwall.

St. Ives

St. Ives offers one of the best New Year’s Eve experiences in the UK.

The celebrations take over much of the town, with the streets around the harbour front closed for traffic, creating a continental setting for pedestrians.

If the tide is out then prepare for a truly-unique beach party, with fireworks and fancy-dress. A not-to-be-missed, family-friendly experience.

Best For: Seeing where the night takes you

Newquay lives up to its reputation as Cornwall’s party hub, with a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration.

At the heart of proceedings is the best firework display in Cornwall – a 30-minute, carefully coordinated extravaganza.

Best For: Fireworks

Carnival atmosphere abounds as Looe gets into the New Year’s spirit.

Fancy-dress celebrations are in full-swing, as New Year’s Eve celebrations at Looe involve not one, but two fireworks displays – One at 6pm for families, and a later display to ring in the New Year.

Best For: Fancy Dress
